Unless you are using enhanced hard drive controller, you can not seem
to control the power on the hard drive individually.

You may want to consider external hard drive enclosures or drive docks
( aka toasters.) These can be powered off / on any time.

One other possible suggestion...

I'm assuming you're working with a desktop PC, right? That being the case,
is there any possibility you have one or more vacant 5 1/4" bays on your
computer case? If so, you might want to consider removable hard drives
(mobile racks) to easily achieve your objective. These are *not* external
enclosures as such, but it may be the type of device that "smlunatick" is
referring to. If you're interested, I can tell you a bit more about them.

I have a mobile rack and a 1TB HDD external,
so it seems the only way out, is to just unplug the 2 HDD's that are not
doing anything but holding Ghost volumes.
thanks to all ___ Bill in OZ

Well, since you already have a mobile rack that apparently contains your
system drive, wouldn't it be practical to install that drive as an internal
HDD and use your mobile rack to house the other two HDDs, each in their own
removable tray?
