Power Saver Mode

Came home from vacation and powered up my desk top computer. All appeared to
be going fine but the only thing that appears on the monitor is "Power Saver
Mode". This appears briefly then screen goes blank. I have tried inserting
the driver cd and the Window disk all to no avail. If I push the moniter's
power botton off the on, the same message reappears.

Check the power management features in BIOS (tapping F1 when powering up).

Turn off the computer, unplug the monitor from the back of the computer,
plug it back in, then restart the computer. The graphics card may have
"bit the dust" since the monitor is no longer getting a signal from it.

I believe I've tried most keys while powering up, nothing. Unplugged monitor,
re-connected, nothing changed.

I would assume that the graphics card is working - at least somehow, based
on your note "the only thing that appears on the monitor is "Power Saver
Mode". Can you describe exactly what you do see?

What puzzles me a lot is that you apparently are not getting access to the
BIOS. What make - and version is your desk top?

You could try a boot to get access to the Recovery Console, just to see
whether the monitor behaves or not, "Description of the Windows XP Recovery
Console":

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/en-us

Presumably have you tried to start the computer in safe mode:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322205/en-us

When booting up the computer and just let it "do its work" as if the monitor
was working and let the time elapse which is normally required for the
computer to get available for use; what does that look like?

Just a thought: "Came home from vacation and powered up my desk top
computer." Did you stay at the computer all the time awaiting it to be
working, or did you go for a cup of coffee or something in the meantime? What
I am at, is that Microsoft launched a lot of updates on the 14.th, which
apparently have caused a lot of problems and screeming (again) around the
world. Among the updates is the Security Update for Windows Media Player 11
for Windows XP (KB936782), which COULD effect the monitor display, given it
was automatically installed on your computer - and had a bug or caused
conflicts.

Each time I powered up computer, I stayed in front of it. The monitor screen
remained black through the appearent boot process. Then the small window will
appear in middle of monitor screen "Power Saver Mode" for a few seconds,
disappears leaving a dark screen, as if it is turned off. If I push one of
the monitor adjustment bottons, light/darken, or brightness, the small windon
will reappear again for a few moments. I have tried booting with Window Disk
in cd bay and the recovery disk in with noticable affect. While on vacation,
the computer was disconnected from both the electric and internet.
I connected a different monitor and although I did not get the small window
the monitor screen remained light blue and did not respond to any computer
activites or my attempts to adjust the screen output. Any more suggestions?
Or is it time to take it into the shop?
Thanks, jerry d.

The graphics card is not sending a signal to the monitor. Two things to
try:

- Unplug the computer, open the case, remove the graphics card, reinsert
the graphics card, close the case, plug in the computer, restart the
computer.

- Try another graphics card.

Added to Elmos advices you might try steps in the following reference:

http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/7002832/700283204.shtml

although you have carried out something similar when replacing the monitors,
and the fact that "DPMS OFF MODE" message is different from yours "Power
Saver Mode".

With no resolution am I afraid your own advice is the final step to take.

For pure curiousity: What is the serie - and part number of your Gateway?

Good luck,

Removed and replaced the graphic card, no chnage.
I purchased the computer in 2002 it's a Gateway 500SE, P4 1.6 with 256
Memory and 20 GB Hard Drive. We use it for email and some surffing.
As to replacing the graphic card, I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to
the inter-wokings of a computer. So I'm not sure what graphic card to use if
I can't find an exact match to the current card. Current Card is "Nvidia
geForce2MX 200". Don't want to invest too much in it. Any further ideas? Your
assistance (Ka2H and Elmo) thus far is greatly appriciated.

Just go to Staples, Best Buy, Comp USA, or Office Depot and buy a cheap
card. You don't need anything special.
