i had a company embed a wmv video into my powerpoint presenation.

when i have it stored on the network drive, it plays fine.

when i have it stored on my hard drive, it doesn't play. and the video link
re-updated itself to the location of the wmv video - it just wouldnt' play.

why?

Hi Michelle

It is always best to keep the video file & the powerpoint in the same folder
(with a short file path) and move the whole folder around the place as video
files cannot be embedded - they are always linked. See here for a great
tutorial on using video:

The video file does move with the PPT... that is why i'm confused.

stored on our network drive - it works

stored on my hard drive or my manager's laptop - it doesn't work.

Hi Michelle

Make sure it is stored in a folder with a short file path (e.g. C:\test)
rather than somewhere deep within the 'my documents' tree (which in XP is
typically this long before you even start:C:\Documents and
Settings\<username>\My Documents).

I just tried it on my flash drive and it worked...

I just tried running it from a cd and it worked...

why doesn't it work on desktop/laptop hard drive?

Where did you store it on the harddrive? Directly on C: or in some folders
with very long names? For example if you put the file on the desktop that
may be a really long path so that the video fails to play.

Here's an example of a really long folder/path

c:\documents and settings\your username\my documents\presentations\2008\the
year that time forgot\dave

Here's an example of a really short folder/path

c:\presents\

On most computers the end user thinks that everthing is in the short path of

\my documents\

but hidden away below that is the full path of
c:\documents and settings\your username\

When the total path length gets over 128 characters, powerpoint will not
find the linked video clip

see point 2

Yep - there is a character limit (of 128? off the top of my head) to the
file path. Just another of those things sent to test us :)
