PowerPoint 2002/2003
Go to the slide in the middle of your presentation.
Insert
Movies and sounds
Sound from file
select your sound
Click on Automatic when asked how the sound should play.
An icon with a speaker should appear, drag it outside the slide limits.
Right click the icon and choose custom animation.
In the custom animation task pane choose with previous of after previous
next to Begin. The sound item should be first in your list of animations.
Double click the sound entry in the task pane, on the Effects tab, choose
from beginning, click the radio button beside Stop Playing after. Put in a
high number in the box if you want your music to play throughout the rest of
your
presentation. If it only has to play for one slide choose the radio button
next to
Stop playing after current slide.

If the song is a wav file (or you know how to add a wav header if its an mp3)
then another way is to insert it as a transition sound on the slide in the
middle

Slide show > slide transition
Scroll down in the "sound" box to "other sound"
Navigate to your sound file

Advantage of this is it will be embedded and it will play across slides
without adjusting settings

To add a wav header to mp3 files
Download Cdex : http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos
Select the mp3
Convert > add a riff wav header to mp2/3
OK
