Power options systray icon disappears after installing SP2

Hi,

I recently installed SP2 on my DELL Latitude laptop.
I am a software developer so I have a ton of stuff installed, i.e SQL Server
2000, VS.NET 2003 etc.. (all of which work fine by the way)
how the icon that should be displayed in the systray by the time
representing power options is now missing.

Previously regardless of whether I was running from AC or battery an icon
would appear (either a plug or a battery).
In the power options in control panel the checkbox for "always show icon on
the taskbar" is ticked.
I have tried clearing it, applying the changes and then ticking it again and
applying it again, but no luck.

It does however still pop-up an alert icon and balloon tip when running from
battery and it is low, however as soon as you click on the
balloon tip it disappears.

It's only a small thing and I can live with it if necessary, but if possible
I would like to get it sorted out.
Anybody have any ideas?

Regards,
Peter

Check this setting.....

Right-click Start Button > Properties > Taskbar > Uncheck "Hide Inactive
Icons"

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

However it is not inactive it is simply not there anymore.

All that you suggestion does is turn of the hide functionality altogether.
Which you don't need to do, if you want to see inactive icons you simple
click
the (<) left pointing arrow button that is next to the systray area.

However as I said a moment ago, it is simply not there anymore.

Anybody have an ideas?
Any MS bods reading this?

Regards,
Peter

Not exactly, since if you click on the customize button next to the "Hide
inactive icons", and then click on a particular icon , there is an option
there to always hide the icon, regardless of whether it is active or not. So
it's worth checking that setting if you haven't already.

Actually no .. you're correct .. it can still be viewed via the arrow as you
said. Forget my last post.

Hi:

I also use Dell's notebook for a while from I8000 till I8600 and some
Latitude models.

This thing happened to me all the time for some unknown reasons, and for my
own experiences, it is not related to SP per se.

I usually do it with two methods:

(1) Wait a little bit of longer for the system loading - usually there will
be a second loading after the completion of the first one (about 10-20
seconds later) and you can tell by the little green light of the hard disk.

(2) If you need to get the icon back after login into the account, the
easiest way is to log off and login again. The second login will bring back
all the missing icons on the systray.

I don't know the reasons but hope that will work for you.

Good luck.

I currently have this going on on two seperate laptops, a Compaq Presario
1710 and a brand-new Dell Inspiron 5160. And I NEVER had the problem before
installing SP2. I am ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED it's an SP2 bug.

Fine and good as a hack, but someone from MS needs to address this, it's not
an acceptable long-term solution.
