Power Options for XP Non-Admin Users

Ken Jones

Hi,

How do I change the time to "Turn off Monitor" in the Windows XP Power
Options Properties (from the Display Properties) for a user account
that belongs to the Users group, not the Administrators group? The
default is set to 20 minutes. I would like to change it to 5 minutes.

Can my administrator set the default 5 minutes for all users? How?

Thanks a bunch.

Hi Ken.

Yes, your administrator should be able to change it for you. I have
also found that many things as far as permissions goes in XP are set by
ownership, so it's possible you could create your own power scheme and
be able to edit it then. If you are not able to change the time for
when the monitor turns off, have you tried switching to a different
power scheme?

My admin does not know how to change the default value for "Turn off
Monitor" in the Power settings from 20 minutes to 5 minutes. He can
change it in his admin account, but it does not affect anyone else. The
other users still have 20 minutes. He does not know how to do it in a
way that will affect all users. Can someone please post an answer.

Thanks.

From a non-privileged account...Windows Explorer (or My Computer) find file:
c:\windows\system32\powercfg.cpl
Hold CTRL/SHIFT then right click the file so that the RUN AS appears (this
is used to run an executable as the admin)
Administrator enters his username and pw
Administrator changes value from 20 to 5
This will change it for that account only.

Future PCs it should be set this way on the Default user profile...

We tried that. It changes the power setting for the admin account, not
for the non-admin account.

Thanks,
Ken
