Power Management

I think that I have a problem with power management in
Windows XP. I find that my computer will periodically
resume from Sleep Mode by itself.

I will put my computer into sleep mode by going: Start ->
Turn off Computer -> Stand By. It goes into sleep mode
fine. But I'll come back some time later and the computer
is on agian!

I have disabled anything running in the background that
would cause this computer to wake (Scheduled Tasks, E-
mail, Antivirus, etc...) but I still have this problem.

I'm really not sure where to go from here. Does anyone
else have this sort of issue with Windows? Thanks

Could check that your modem is not set to bring it out of standby (or some
other hardware device)

Right-click "My Computer" > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager

Click the plus sign by "Modems" to expand then right-click your modem >
Properties > Power Management > Uncheck "Allow this device to bring the
computer out of standby"

Then check your settings eg for mouse and keyboard and other devices. A
slight move of the mouse can bring it out of standby too.

Rightclick center of screen/Properties/ScreenSaver tab
Click "Power" button near bottom, then set
System Hibernate to "Never"
System Standby to "never"
Click Apply and OK

Hello Byte.

Thanks! That actually worked. I have also noticed some
odd behavior.

I took the following steps and found some observations.

- I set System Stand By time to 1 Hour.
- I went Start -> Turn Off Computer -> Stand By
(The computer went in to stand by mode with no
problems)
- I started a stop watch to see how long the computer
would stay in stand by mode

After some time, the computer woke on it's own. I found
that the computer actually woke EXACTLY after 1 Hour (the
same time that I had the "System Stand By" set to).

I repeated this procedure but set the power
management "System Stand By" to 2 hours. I manually put
the computer into stand by and found that the computer
would stay in stand by for EXACTLY 2 hours (again...the
same time that I had "System Stand By" set to).

Similarly, I set "System Stand By" to 'Never'. I manually
put the computer in to stand by. I found that the
computer stayed in stand by mode until I told it to resume
and never woke automatically.

I think that what is happening is this: When the next
power save mode is due, the power management is waking the
computer.

Does your computer do this too? Is there a fix for this?

Thanks,

Jack
