Power icon on taskbar

I have XP Pro SP2 on my HP6120 notebook
The power icon does not show on the taskbar after I've booted up.

I HAVE selected "always show icon on the taskbar", but the only way I can
get it to display:

open power management, advanced,
disable "always show...", apply,
then enable "always show..." apply.
This is a pain in the butt.

I have to do this every time after I've booted up!!!

I've tried repairing windows, to no avail.
I've also tried third party power meters (which work fine)- but I shouldn't
have to do that.

Please help.
