power down with specific timing

have a pretty interesting doozy here.

I lend my monitor to my neighbor yesterday. Connect it back to my
computer today and turn on the power. Everything powers up and starts
as normal, and the Windows XP start up screen (with the blue loading
bar) starts up as normal. But as soon as it's supposed to be done w/
this screen and show me the desktop, a sound pops from the computer
and the monitor goes blank, even going from "green" to
"yellow" on the power button as if the computer was turned
off. But the computer isn't turned off, and actually WON'T turn off.
I tried shutting it down with the keyboard as if the operating system
were actually still going but the monitor signal was off. No luck. I
tried holding in the power button for 10 seconds, which will usually
shut it down..no luck. So I have to physically unplug it.

Now this happens every single time at the exact same time...just after
the initial windows screen. BUT, if i go into safe mode (which it
prompts me for after an initial "pull the plug"), it works
fine, and then RESETTING from safe mode, as a normal startup, works
fine. So, it's possible for me to get to my normal desktop and
startup, but to do so I need to turn it on, wait for it to go blank,
unplug it, start it again, choose safe mode, then start>reset and
it comes back on fine in normal start up. Adding to the mix, once in
a while when the screen goes blank that initial time, the computer
starts revving so high and continuously it sounds like it's going to
explode, before which of course I unplug it.

So, I'm at a loss. Exhibits portions of hardware failure (monitor and
revving, unable to shut down) and software failure (occurs at a
specific point in software start up, only from a fresh boot.

Any thoughts?

if you can set the monitor manually try setting the refresh rate at 60
hertz. You neighbor may have set to a refresh rate that you card cannot use.
Just a guess.

Did you hook up another monitor in the mean time (while the neighbor used yours)? Check
the settings in safe mode you may be out refresh limit.
