Power down vs Shut down question

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 600M laptop. The power button, in XP, used to turn off
the computer. With Vista, when I use that button to shut down the computer,
it goes into a 'low power state' mode and at that stage, I can't for the life
of me get it to power back up. I tried pressing the power button and the
power light comes on, but no screen. I've tried pressing keys on the
keyboard, same result. The only way I've been able to get it to work is to
hold the power button until it crashes an then restart it. Don't like doing
that!
By the way, my power button has the same circle with a line comming out the
top symbol on it as the symbol in the Vista Start menu left of the lock
symbol in the shut down line.
Got any suggestions on powering up from the 'low power state' mode, or
turning off this computer other than going into the shut down menu to click
on shut down, like in the old Windows 98 and ME versions?
Thanks, Tom

Tom,

I don't know why your laptop is doing that... While I have a the 610M it
seems to be much the same system. As always with sleep modes, ensure you
have the latest system ROM BIOS for your system.

As for shutting the system down you can change the behaviour of the power
button:

Go to the Control Panel. On the Left Display Menu you will see "Choose what
the power button does". From there you will see When I press the power
button. Choose what you need from the drop down menu.

Make sure you save your changes, and you should be done!

Found it under 'Power Options" in the control panel.
THANKS!
Wish I could figure out why it won't wake up from 'sleep' mode.

Glad I could help Tom.

Remember to double check your system ROM BIOS and make sure it is up to
date! I can't promise it will fix the problems, but it's an easy thing to
do!

Bill, can you give me a link to download the most current BIOS and
instructions on how to install them. While this computer is still under
warranty, I'm sure Dell would not help if the knew I had upgraded the OS to
Vista.
Thanks again for all your help.
