Power cut - Any advise on what to do next?

We keep having power-cuts every month or two.
Do you have any advise about what to do to my WindowsXP following a
power cut?

e.g. Defrag / Scandisk - Do they may any difference?
Are there any other freebie disk-repair utitilities?

And before you ask, no - unfortunately we cant afford a UPS

A basic UPS can be purchased for ~$50 US w/ monitoring and
shutdown software. But I understand budget limitations. As long
as the disk volumes are formatted NTFS you have some measure
of protection in it's transactional operation. Abrupt loss of power
can not only affect the drive contents but also other sensitive parts
such as RAM. Momentary "Brown-Outs" are another problem
that can cause PC damage. To verify the drive's state ( Dirty or
Clean ) you need to run a Chkdsk on the volume. Scandisk is a
term used with Windows 9X/ME OS'es. Defrag is performance
related and not an integrity type utility. One thing to monitor is the
SMART database statistics on the drive. SpeedFan offers that as
a part of it's monitoring capabilities.

There isn't any scandisk in XP, that was only for Win 9x.
Try chkdsk.

If you have frequent power-cuts, you, sooner or later, will have to
replace your computer. UPS are not that expensive and way cheaper than a
new computer.

My consideration is an UPS is long-term investment in my PC's protection and
operation. So far, an UPS can moved from one PC to another as long as it
has adequate battery power for closeout and shutdown time. If you get
another PC, you keep the UPS. The UPS software usually provided is usually
not needed as an alarm will sound from the UPS if you lose power. If you
have a habit of leaving the PC unattended, do install such software, and be
sure it works by testing it.

Bear in mind, if you manually shutdown using an UPS, you need the monitor
connected to the UPS as well during a power outage.
