Power Button problem

I know this is OT, but my system does have XP on it!
Sometimes, especially in wet weather season, when I press my power button on
my PC, it will blink, but won't start. It gives sort of a burp, then goes
dead without booting. No power. I can see a LED inside the case is lit, so
power is getting to the MB, but it just won't boot up. I have to completely
power down numerous times (and I mean numerous), turn power back on and
press the button and eventually it will kick in.
I was told by a shop that I need to replace the case. This seems a bit
extreme. Can't I simply replace the power switch somehow? Or is the switch
really integral to the case?
Thanks for your opinions on this.

in most cases you could just replace the switch, but its possible that in
your situation the switch is hard wired and built into the case. still, you
might try a different computer shop or open the case and see for yourself.

Post to a hardware newsgroup.

Well to actually offer a valid hardware opinion the problem the box
would have to be disassembled and inspected. BUT since XP is what this
group is all about, just keep XP running and then there isn't a problem.

There are 3 separate components that can cause the symptoms you
describe: the power supply, the motherboard, or the switch, in order of
likelihood. Contact the computer's manufacturer to see if they offer
any diagnostic tools to narrow down the problem.

You're right, this IS off topic. Post in a h/w group as it has
nothing to do with the OS.

LMO:
It really depends upon the case construction. Assuming it *is* a defective
power switch, with some cases a replacement switch is available from the
manufacturer of the case and can be installed by the end user. With many
cases because of its design, it's near impossible for the end user to
install a new switch in the case and the only practical solution is to
purchase a new case. Assuming you know the name of the manufacturer of your
case your best bet is to contact them for their assistance.

On the other hand are you certain that it's the power switch that's causing
your problem? From your description of the problem it sounds like there's a
strong possibility that a defective power supply may be causing this
problem. (The fact that power is flowing to the motherboard is *no*
indication of a non-defective functioning PS). So check out the PS either
with a PS tester or better yet, a replacement PS that (hopefully) you can
lay your hands on.
