Potentially stupid question about Windows Media Player (ON TOPIC)

I was asked a question today that I could not answer and I was hoping
that the good-folks in this NG could offer some responses.

The question came up during a short conversation in the office about
conspiracy theories and Microsoft trying to take over all computers in
the world. My friend and co-worker admitted that he refuses to update
or upgrade anything on his computer that came from Microsoft---but now
he is finding media on the Net that he cannot play because he doesn't
have the latest version of Windows Media Player.

Here is the question that he asked: "You've heard of Real Alternative
and Quicktime Alternative. Is there an Alternative for Windows Media
Player's latest version?"

The truth is: I don't know and I don't know where to look for something
like that.

Any takers?

Thanks for the help!

Tell your friend that the Masons are trying to take over the world. And the
jewes. And Disney too. And Jehova's witness. And tell him not to look TV:
the media is conspiring to take over he universe.

HAHA!!! That reminds me of that crazy sci-fi movie where all the
billboard signs had secret messages and the only way to see the aliens
was if you wore special sunglasses.

Disney too?---I would hate to see a man wearing a Guy Fawkes mask
throwing daggers at Mickey Mouse! ;)

George, trying your video tutorial using the latest versions of FF and
Opera didn't work for me. I had to use IE. Is it only me? :)

I've never been much into the entertainment aspects of the web, and as
a result I'm in the newbie category when it comes to codecs and
players. I do now have the mega version of KLite installed. So far
I've just watched your tutorial one time, and thanks for that. I'll
post my questions in this thread since it's so aptly named :)
