Postable Media Devices icon

Good morning, I purchased a Creative Zen V Plus mp3 player. I have
noticed that after the software installation I have no Portable Media
Devices icon in the control panel. When I go to add other players to
the list I can't. Where did it go? Could the Zen software have taken
it over? I dont really want to uninstall the Zen to see if it comes
back if I dont have too. Any and all suggestion welcome. Thank
Jinxy

I have not seen 'Portable Media Devices' in the control panel before. I have quite a few
MP3 players loaded.

That cpl isn't on my "Start / Control Panel" either.
I'm running XP Pro SP2 plus ALL available updates.

The original poster didn't specify which OS they were running.

What is it with this crowd?
It seems like at least 25% of the posts around here are back-biting
sewage posts.

It'd be nice if all problems posts included at least some OS version
info, but that'll probably never happen.

heh ::)))

That makes two out of a billion.

Not that it matters, but most suspect IMO would be your version of
Media Player. And there would be other leads.

Just like whining about it. I believe it's the nature of the freedom
of speech beast in an unmoderated worldwide public forum. It's like
a reflection of the world IMO.

Yeah.

But the bottom line is that's the responsibility of the person
asking for help. The better the question, the better the answers.

As I said, I have ALL Windows Updates installed, which includes Media
Player 11.

You're using WMP 10?

The guy said things changed after installing the Zen software, didn't
he? The version on WMP would not change due to that install.

Your point is moot.

PS, I clean installed this Full Rack of XP SP2 plus ALL Windows
Updates fresh last weekend, so there's little chance that it could've
magically dissappeared.

Let's get back to the question that started this thread, eh?

Hmmmmm, Google's I'm Feeling Lucky brings us here:
http://www.tabletquestions.com/windows-xp/23696-control-panel.html
which only makes it 3 out of X where it's missing.

Then I searched using this search term:
XP "Control Panel" "Portable Media Devices" missing
Results 1 - 100 of about 32,700 for XP "control panel" "portable Media
Devices" missing. (0.35 seconds)
That brings to 32,700 out of X who have missing Portable Media Devices
in Control Panel.

I'm sure there's an answer to this guy's problem in that set of
results somewhere.

So we add Zen to the equation...
That brings us down to 21 results.
listed here: http://tinyurl.com/334x6o
There's gotta be an answer there in that...

Carry on.
I don't have a Creative Labs Zen to go any further on helping solve
this mystery.
My point is that it can be missing on a CLEAN install of XP Pro SP2
with ALL Windows Updates added.

My theory is that it doesn't show up until it's needed.
I don't have any portable media devices so why should it be in control
panel, eh?

There's also several different driver-level methods for getting the
PMD hooked into XP. Only the MS-approved (and possibly a few others)
would bring this control panel into play. Perhaps the Zen doesn't use
the Microsoft method for interacting with XP. It would be the first
time Creative Labs took their own route to get into the system. Some
outfits do it their own way for greater efficiency. It happens all
the time.

cheers

Where's my beer?

that's four-eyes and three big grins...

There's mention in this article that the Portable Media Devices
control panel is an ADD-IN.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886612/en-us

The weird part on this is that I've searched every which way on
Microsoft's TecNet and Support Knowledge Base and there's no mention
of it in any other article in either of those two.

http://support.microsoft.com
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

Those 21 articles found through Google aren't much help either.

Maybe I missed something along the way...

The one page I did find has some information on fixing it that came
from somewhere, but I can't find the original.

http://www.tabletquestions.com/windows-xp/23696-control-panel.html

Google LOSES the battle AND so do Microsoft's primary support sites on
this problem.

FIDSK, FORMAT, REINSTALL...

That'll fix it. ::)))

Ahhhhhhhhhhh...

Reinstall windows media player???

I sent a note to the team on this issue.
We'll see what comes back.
I'll let you know if they have anything on it.
It looks like it's not an uncommon problem.

My contract there ended last month, otherwise I'd just look it up
myself.

Yeah, I work at Creative Labs now and then... ::)))

Why do you care that someone else has a Control Panel entry that you
don't have?

Have you contacted Creative Tech Support on this, yet?
