Post-Update Problems with Startup

R

Ryan

Last Wednesday (February 11, 2004), I downloaded the XP
Update KB828028. This is the one that helped protect my
computer from potential hacking. Ever since this update,
my computer has booted very slowly. Before the
installation of this update, I had a boot time of roughly
30 seconds. The computer still starts up this fast, but
Windows takes longer to get fully up and running. For
example, ZoneAlarm (firewall) and Norton Anti-Virus take
roughly two minutes to open, rather than instantaneous,
like before. I don't hear the windows "welcome" chime
until about two minutes after my computer is running,
either--it'll start right before ZoneAlarm and Norton
load. Also, when in Internet Explorer, I'll hit "ctrl +
o," type in the desired web address, and explorer will
freeze on me. It works when I type it into the address
bar on the toolbar, though. The last vital detail I've
noticed is when I open "My Computer," the computer
greatly lags. The "browsing" flashlight pops up, and it
takes several minutes for that page to load.

Oh yeah, when the computer restarts/boots up, I get a
message saying that Windows "did not start up properly"--
It allows me to either continue in safe mode, use last
known good configuration, or continue through Windows
normally.

Has anybody had similar experiences to what I'm going
through? If so, do you know how to fix this problem?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading.

I had a 2 minute+ delay when right-clicking on a folder
(anywhere). Same with trying to delete a folder. I ran
System Restore to a point before I installed that update,
and my problems went away. You can also uninstall the
update and see what happens.
