I have search these boards and found numerous replies about getting the
"Unable to log you on because of an account restriciton" mssg on the
bootup and have just installed the Net Framework 1.1 SP1 update but
this problem remains. I am running XP SP2 Home on a 2+ yr old desktop
with 1 gig ram and 80gig harddisk with plenty of free space (recently
defragged)

The closest information I saw was a reference to Ramesh Srinivasan's,
MS-MVP walkthru on running control userpasswords2, but that also has
not been helped.

I have read that the ASPNET user account is required and has to be
retained, but where I am particularly confused is that (I think) a new
Administrator user name was created in addition to what I have always
had the Customer as User name (full name is TGH which shows on the
logon screen) both of which are set as Administrators. I also
originally created a Guest/Guests account, so there are four user
accounts when I only need the user and guest plus the ASPNET account
right?

Anyway, as it stands now the box for "Users must enter user
name/password" etc box is unchecked and I have tried checking it and
entering the password (the right one I think since it never gives me an
error mssg). I also saw one post that said XP Home required changes
only in the Safe mode which also was tried but the same thing keeps
happening after a reboot.

Thanks in advance - Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that the Control Panel/User Accounts screen only
shows three accounts TGH (computer adminstrator), Guest and ASP.Net
(limited account password protected). The Administrator account which
comes up when running control userpasswords2 is not shown.

Short answer:
When you ran control userpasswords2, you should have changed
the entry in the "Automatically Log On" box from Administrator
to TGH.

Long answer:
First, some information. Every XP system has a built in account
named Administrator. It's there for emergency use only. In XP
Home Edition you need to boot into Safe Mode in order to access
this account. If you try to logon as Administrator in Normal
Mode, you see the error message you're getting. When you ran
control userpaswords2, you set up your system to automatically
logon the Administrator account.

To fix this problem, do the following:

Go to Start -> Run and enter the following in the Open box,

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In User Accounts, put the check mark back in the box next to
"Users of this computer must enter a user name and password to
use this computer".
Next, remove the check mark and hit the Apply or OK button.
A box will pop up titled "Automatically Log On".
Change the entry in the User name box from Administrator to
your account, TGH.
Enter your password twice.
Click OK twice.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck

Thanks big time Nepatsfan!

I had a hunch I screwed up somewhere early on in the process but
obviously couldn't figure out where or when. And even the first time I
followed your directions I guessed at the password I might have set
years ago and your idea didn't work until I just left the passwords
blank.

So thanks again ....and kudos from a verrrrry frustrated XP-user and
Chicago Bears fan :)

ps - for future reference, is it common courtesy on this board to keep
or delete the text below from a previous message? Also curious how I
get an email sent to me when I receive a response to a post (tried to
add my email to the Followup-To line but no luck).
