Possible Vista Problems

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the group I should be writing to so bear
with me, please.

I've been using vista for about 6 months at work. When I started
out IE7 worked if friendly messages were on and when I turned them
off, the browser hung. Over time IE7 has stopped working.

I've tried turning off all add-ons, resetting to factory settings,
running from the start menu with out add-ons, etc. Oh and I ran
adaware as well. And uninstalled google toolbar (which I think got
installed just around the time IE7 stopped working.

Not sure what to do. I also found that a couple of sites that use
pls files cause problems. The message is always that the browser can't
connect to the server. I asked if anyone in the tech department at my
work had blocked streaming and was told no.

Since I'm not having any trouble with other computers I am
wondering if it is vista (ultimate on my machine).


Any help would be appreciated.

Help me out here. What in the world do you mean by "if friendly messages
are turned on"--that means nothing to me. "When you turned them off..."

Where and what are you referencing here?

It's not clear from your message precisely what you're having trouble doing.
Are you having trouble surfing the web, or just trouble streaming using IE
or what exactly?

I'd run SFC which often fixes IE problems. Without more precise info, it's
difficult to give advice.

***SFC as a Remedy***:

SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a
backup battery I suppose. In Vista of course, they have changed it somewhat
and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different
twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It
scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical
folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are
corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE,
Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7.
It protects these things from changes by any source including
administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them.

How to Run SFC:

Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up
at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and
when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes
and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files
with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it.

For some reason my last reply disappeared into cyberspace. I'll
clarify the "friendly messages" first.

If you go to the internet options section of IE7 and look under
browsing you'll see a choice that says, "Show friendly http error
messages". I've always heard it called "friendly message".

Now the chronology. I included the reference to friendly messages
only to show the sequence of events, hoping someone had the same thing
happen.

1. Way back in Feb, I started a new job and got a new vista machine
(ultimate). IE7 worked then but wouldn't work if friend messages was
turned off.
2. Jump to today. Actually this started about two months ago. IE7
stopped doing much of anything but saying it couldn't display the web
page. I tried:
a.running it from the start menu with no add ons. In this case I
actually got to see the "check for latest windows updates" link.
However if I click it I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the
webpage" message.
b. disabling add-ons inside IE7 and reseting to factory settings. In
this case bringing up IE7 gave me the cannot display webpage message.

By the way thanks for the advice on SFC. I ran it and it mentioned
that there were some files it couldn't replace. The log (which is
enormous) didn't seem to show any problems but I can't be sure. The
result was that IE7 still didn't work.

Because I can't go to IE7 to get uninstalled updates, it's hard for me
to figure out which one's I need. I have to use firefox.

This next problem may not have anything to do with my problem with IE7
but with computers you never know. I had been listening to a streaming
web radio station that used pls files. All of a sudden, when I tried
to bring up that station inside media player, I got a message saying
media player couldn't connect to the server. I've thrown that in
because it may be related.

Any help would be appreciated.
