Bit of advice please.

Windows XP Home with PC-cillin 2000 anti virus installed. Turns out that

this verison of pc-cillin stopped getting updates in June.

Problem is that the connection speed is running like a dog. Closed all

applications and you still get a ton of data being transferred but nothing
is open IE, Outook Express all closed). Found various weird and wonderful
exe processes running (sult.exe, kfglum.exe) and tried killing them off. No
joy.

Pc-cillin scan keeps looping. Can't install another anti-virus (Sophps) as it hangs the pc.

Ran Spybot Search & Destroy which found some stuff which was killed off.

Problem is I'm sure this pc has a virus/trojan which is interfering with
pc-cillin. Its also stopping me installing Sophos.

Short of a rebuild can anyone give me some pointers as to which type of

virus/trojan this may be so I can try a more specific approach in cleaning
the pc?

Sounds more like adware/spyware, not viral. In my
opinion, I think the malware is more of a problem now than
actual viruses.
There is a site called askmarvin.ca that has a whole
section devoted to that stuff. You should run HijackThis!
on your computer and post the log to askmarvin's spyware
removal section. There are several there that know what
belongs and what does not, and they can direct you from
there.
They have the tools (including the latest HijackThis!
program) available for free download.

I'll try running Hijack This! and will probably also try AdAware - those

and Spybot S&D surely should cover everything.

Is the fact that I cannot install another anti virus product indicative of

adware and spyware now? I would've expected that sympton to be more as a
result of a virus.

Start with McAfee stinger. This is a stand along virus scanner that will
run from a floppy. That might help enough to install an AV program.
Most can be run from the install CD as well to check the system before
installation. Then run some online scanners:
