possible virus is it?

i have a toshiba satellite 2.0ghz intel celeron, 240 ram on a 30gig
harddrive, XP Home SP1.
Recently, I tried to bring up task manager, by pressing crtl - alt - del,
but it would only show up for less than a second and it goes away. also, i
am unable to bring up the administrative tools - event viewer, just nothing
happens.
i tried to run "msconfig" and it won't show up. so i tried running my
antivirus, to no avail. it seems that something is preventing me from doing
any diagnostics. could this be a virus residing in my system? please
advise...i am getting frustrated. i cannot even set my notebook to bios, it
just doesn't doit. but i could get to safe mode, i can do the things i
cannot when i am not in the safe mode.
