Hi there,
Is it possible to have a Word Document or Excel Spreadsheet on a WIN 2000
server that a user can only view? I don't want them to be able to "save" or
"print" the file. Just view, nothing more. WIN 2000 permission don't appear
to do the task I would like.

Thanks

If you use NTFS permissions to grant only "read" access to these users, they
can open the file and read it, but not modify it or delete it. However, they
can print it, they can copy data in it to a new document, and so forth - if
you don't trust them not to do this, don't grant them access to it at all.

Hi Dave,
I tried your suggestion and it didn't work. The user can still save the
document under a different name or print it.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Randy

The accountant would like to publish some sales documents but she doesn't
want anyone to be able to print it or save it under a new name. This would
provide visability of sales data but also prevent someone from distributing
the info to non authorized people.

Randy

What you want will be difficult if not impossible.

Randy

Have her print it out & show it to the users under physical supervision, or
have a powerpoint/slide presentation for this data.

I can't think of any way to do what you want unless users connect to a
terminal services session and are restricted from copy/paste, print, print
screen, and so forth - and am not 100% sure it would work even then.

That's what I was thinking too, the user still could printscreen the TS
session window, paste locally and print.

Thankyou both for your suggestions. I appreciate the help.
I'll tell her that we'll have to think of a different way.

The permissions will. You must remove the permissions on the file for the profile or group you do not want to have modify control. You must also use that profile when logging on. The permissions you want are Read and Read & Execute. Assuming NTFS file system.

What you want to do is create a PDF document with security. This is
the only way to do this. However, you will Adobe Acrobat. I have
Acrobat 5.0 and this is what it says in the Security Section
You can limit access to all Adobe PDF files created by Distiller by
giving the files passwords and restricting certain features such as
printing and editing. You can limit the access when you first create a
PDF file or any time you save the file in Acrobat. When files have
restricted features, any tools and menu items related to those
features are dimmed. A PDF file can have an open document password
(user password) and a change security settings password (master
password). If the file has both passwords, it can be opened with
either one. When a file is opened with an open document password, the
security restrictions are temporarily disabled. If you set any
security restrictions in your file, you should also specify a change
security setting password (master password); otherwise anyone who
opens the file could remove the restrictions.

Cheers,

Lara

If they can open it, they can print it or save it elsewhere.
