Possible to upgrade my Nvidia Geforce2 pro?

G

geemike

My new 20" monitor wants 1400 x 1050 resolution. Max my control panel
currently offers is 1280 x 1024.
System is Windows XP Home edition.

Things are a bit blurry, can I upgrade this driver to allow 1400 x
1050?

TIA

A GeForce 2 Pro may be too old to handle that resolution. For about less that
100 dollars, you could pick up a GeForce 5000 or 6000 series card, which is
way newer than the GeForce 2 video card. These should be able to support 1400
x 1050 resolution.

Highly unlikely. By the way, your problem isn't just that it's blurry, but
also that the aspect ratio is wrong. You're running a widescreen monitor at
a standard aspect ratio, so everything will be scrunched up left-to-right.

So is it likely that a new card as suggested above will make the screen
image more clear?

My PC is Pentium 4, 1.51 Ghz; 1500 Mhz; 256 Mb Ram.
This PC is used for homework and cruising the net, so gaming and
graphics processing aren't an issue. The monitor is an Acer 20".

Also, can someone please suggest freeware or a program to purchase that
might take care of some nasty spyware/spawnware ? Spyware blaster and
spybot don't catch whatever the culprit is. Are there any effective
tools that can block this crap effectively? We have Symantec Antivirus
installed and it has quarantined 52 items thus far.

Major thanks,

Mike

This is an LCD monitor? Yes, running at the native resolution for it should
solve the blurriness problem, and getting a card that supports that
resolution is probably what you need.

The best way to deal with malware is to practice safe hex, and not get

Thanks for the very useful links. But, combatting this stuff looks
more time consuming than I have time to deal with.

So, how about the option of saving to memory stick the 100 or so Word
docs my daughters have on that PC, noting the various email details and
reformatting the HD? That should get rid of everything at no cost,
and I could then install a firewall and do a bit of reading to keep
this from happening again.
That part is the challenge as one of my daughters likes to download
stuff from the net. Maybe that would have to come to a stop.

Continued thanks,

That certainly would work. Make her account a limited users account as
well. It is much easier if you get ahead of the problem. With a clean
install, make sure the install media has SP2. That way the firewall is
installed and activated with it. Also it's one less step through auto
updates not having to install SP2. If your installation CD does not have
SP2 you can create one with SP2 integrated called slipstreaming. Then
install an AV and go online for the rest of the updates to the OS.

Slipstream

http://unattended.msfn.org/beginner/slipstream.htm

Autostreamer makes the process fairly easy.

Make sure you have a current AV program with up to date definitions. I
recommend against the two big suite programs, Symantec and McAfee. For AV
there is Avast and AVG (both free), and Kaspersky and Nod32 - the heavy
hitters.

You should have several different anti-malware programs installed as well
and run regularly in safe mode including Adaware SE personal 1.06 and Spybot
S&D. Windows Defender works ok too and gives real time protection. See the
links I included earlier on how to keep malware off the system.

Thanks for the replies. My new card is installed and all is well with
that end of things.

I have followed the quick fix instructions at The Parasite Fight and
beefed up my antispyware capability, including subscribing to spyware
blaster for the auto updates (I use my laptop and don't quite trust my
kids to remember to do the updates manually).

I scanned my system with spybot and it found SMITFRAUD888TOOL. I
didn't wasted any time trying to remove it with spybot as that seems
likely to fail.

But I am wondering if this smitfraud.zip tool and instructions offer a
reasonable chance of removing it completely:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic17258.html

I don't possess the time or expertise to sift through my various
registries hunting the nasty components and will probably have to pay
someone to fix if the above tool doesn't work.

Finally, if spybot shows "smitfraud.c-888tool" (not quite sure that's
verbatim) do I have one nasty or two? Add/Remove programs doesn't show
an 888TOOLBAR present, and spybot doesn't find a separate line item for
that bug.

Gracias again!

Suggestions for the usefulness of smitfraud.zip tool by those who have
used it would be much appreciated.

Thx

This is a really nasty Trojan that is difference from smitfraud itself.

I just went through getting rid of it on my home computer but am currently
not there.

From memory:

Everything you need to get rid of is probably in the registry.

Run regedit. Search for 888tool and delete all references to it.

Spybot should point out a registry entry under software - microsoft called
something like: mnmm.

Go to the symantec web site, search for that entry and it will tell you what
specific entries to delete.

If you need more info, repost and I'll get back to you tonight.
