Possible to lock Word files/Decent Rtf viewer

Hi

We are creating reports in RTF format from our application that the user
should be able to print but not alter the contents/formatting etc. of. We
have evaluated rtf viewers but they can either not run in-process to our
application OR do not support rtf features like widow/orphan. The only
decent rtf viewer that supports everything is surprise, surprise Word itself.
However, with Word the user can alter the content/formatting of the document
itself.

I know that with Word 2003 you can actually lock down the document, but we
need to support versions till Word 2000. Is there any way to accomplish
this? Does anybody know of decent rtf viewers which will not allow the user
to edit/alter the report produced?

Thanks

We had a look at PDF, but it is way slower than generating a RTF report. We
looked at using XSL-FO as our data source is a xml file, but the XML-->PDF
vendor's we evaluated were either Java ports, slow and heavy in memory
consumption. We need something lite with the power of RTF formatting
capabilities. Are you aware of any decent PDF tools that can generate PDF's
from XML content?
Thanks

PDF, Carel. That's all there is, and even those aren't unchangeable.

Perhaps you just need to change your PDF settings. For instance, creating a
PDF at 600 DPI makes a lot more work and size than at 300 DPI. You may like
RTF, but unfortunately, it's little more than a pretty text file, and its
features are minimal. I am not aware of ANY application that produces
"unalterable documents", except perhaps Snapshot SNP files out of Access.
They could be alterable, tho, and I'm just not aware of it.
