possible to customize the notification area?

Friends,

(The notification area is the differently colored area to
the right of the taskbar, down at the bottom of the
screen.)

1. I want the date to appear as well as the time.
Please advise if you know how: (e-mail address removed)

2. I want to eliminate all the other buttons - I find
them distracting and superfluous.

Don't think you can display date. the date displays if you hold the
mouse pointer over the clock,
To get rid of the other icons right click the start button>>click
properties.>>>>click taskbar>>>>>click customize then a window pops up
that allows you to take off what you do not want to show down there/

It's unwise to post your mail address, unless you enjoy SPAM.^
 
Someone else has already written how to hide icons in the Notification Area.
As far as I know, for your clock display needs, you'll need a third party
replacement. A
popular free one for Windows XP users is Tclock, which gives many other
options as well as what you are asking for. You can download Tclock at:
