Ports numbers for Roaming Profiles & NLB?

F

Fran Rhomberg

I am trying to determine what port numbers to use for
roaming profiles. I have two servers that are in the
same NLB group (1active, 1passive) for failover purposes.

These servers have dual NIC's in them. NIC 2, is has
Network Load Balancing installed. [NIC2 properties >
Network Load Balance component > Properties button > Port
Rules tab > "Port Range"]

I currently have the same configuration for my Terminal
Servers, and the port range that I use for them is 3389
to 3389.
Thanks,
-FR

While this mainly revoles around what protocols you are
using, you might want to run a packet sniffer on your
network to get all the ports mapped out correctly.

Matthew,
I noticed that port 0136 is registered as Profile Naming
System. Could I use that port number? - FR

I would run a packet tracer, like ethereal or network
monitor, which will monitor the network to see what
packets are going across the network and what ports they
use. Sorry I can't be specific about all this, it is just
that I don't know what ports are used.

Thanks for your reply Matthew. We are using TCP/IP on
our network. I'm not sure I understand how to map all
the ports using a sniffer. I just was wondering what
port number(s) Microsoft recommends for Roaming
Profiles. For example, I know port number 3389 is
recommended for Terminal Server.
Thanks
