It's a gaming platform that some games require you to have :( Half Life 2 primarily, but quite a few other games are using it too.

A bit of a pain, but for anyone with HL2, Crysis etc... installed they probably already have it. ;)
 
I already have Portal but haven't actually tried it yet.

I haven't even started HL2 Episode 2 yet :o

I did finish HL2 Episode One though.

As for Steam, I don't like it either but if you want to play several of the very best Games out there atm, we have little choice. And anyway, I've had no problems with it.
