Portable Drive File Security

What is the best way to achieve file security in the event of losing a
portable drive that I use to transfer files between to XP Pro machines on?
It is NTFS formatted and I don't really want to get into 3rd party apps
unless necessary. They are not incredibly sensitive files but I would not
want them to be read easily.

Thanks.
