Port number for Remote Desktop

R

revlester

I use VNC to connect from work to my home desktop (which
has only one user, no fast user switching). To make it
work I had to open a port on my router firewall. To
connect to work from home (where the desktop PC uses fast
user switching and therefore cannnot accomodate VNC) I am
trying to get Remote Desktop to work. It does not so I
have two questions. I assume I need to open a port for
RD to operate but I could find any reference to it in
help. What is the port that need to be opened with my
router firewall? Do I have to use VPN to operate RD?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Remote desktop uses TCP 3389. You don't need to use a VPN, but if TCP 3389
is blocked you could try going through a VPN instead.

Thanks,
