I would do a search on Google.com for more info on port forwarding. In my
limited understanding, port forwarding wouldn't speed up downloads.
Basically it would open a port (which is like a lane for traffic on your
internet connection highway) directly to one computer on the network (your
son's) It is used for programs - some chat programs, and some games - that
us a specific port for communication with the outside internet. Port
forwarding will open that port to outside hackers as well. Once activated a
forwarded port is like an open door for hackers to get directly through your
routers protection to that computer.
Some people configure the router's port forwarding to increase security.
They do this by directing the incoming traffic to an IP Address that is not
being used by your network. This way, in theory, inbound attacks and probes
get directed to a computer that does not exist like trying to send mail to a
physical house address that doesn't exist.
What ever you do, be very careful and be very informed before doing
anything. I think you'll find more information than you would ever want by
searching for "port forwarding" at
www.google.com. Good luck,
Jim W.
