port 25 dead

Evan

i'm trying to send an e-mail via outlook express. mail won't send. i switch
identities (i've got 3. none of them will send). can't send from there
either. i disable my firewall. can't send. i do some poking around. here's a
good test: telnet in to the mail server. this, i CAN do successfully on port
110, but NOT on port 25. i go to my laptop. i CAN telnet into port 25 from
there.

so, on my main pc, SOMETHING is up with port 25, but i don't know what. can
anyone recommend what the hell i do from here?

(btw, this is actually a wxp sp2 box, but i didn't see an xp.networking
forum.)

thx!!

Uninstall, not disable, firewall software when testing. Many firewall
programs say they're disabled but they are not.

I suggest you start by establishing that the packets are
actually leaving your PC. Install the Ethereal packet
sniffer (www.ethereal.com), then telnet first to a
responding port 110. When you become familiar
with the recorded packets, change to port 25. The
results should tell you quite a lot.

You will probably find that a firewall blocks your
packets somewhere, as Richard suggested.

There is something strange going on here. In your first post
you wrote "i go to my laptop. i CAN telnet into port 25 from
there.". Now if the problem was caused by your ISP then
port 25 would not have worked from your laptop either . . .
Or is it perhaps that the results from the laptop test were
just wishful thinking?

i was hoping no one would notice that...

my laptop is not going through my router, but rather through my neighbor's
wireless network (yes, he knows. i even offered to pay him). BUT...we're
both on sbc dsl, so i just *assumed*...

as a matter of fact, i still don't know why i can telnet port 25 through his
sbc connection but not my sbc connection. i even tried bypassing my router
and going straight pppoe. no luck.

anyways, that's the contradiction you were clever enough to notice. now to
the bonus round... ;-)

Your initial report about the laptop working set the scene
for all replies from Richard and myself. The incident is a
perfect illustration that one must never change more than
one parameter at a time when trouble-shooting.

Had you mentioned this fact the first time around you probably would have
had an instant answer, but like everyone else I assumed you were talking
about two computers on the same connection.

my apologies to you both. i was not intentionally misleading you guys. i
honestly believed (and still believe) that because we were both on sbc (and
live across the hall, fer crissakes!), there should have been no difference.
i was wrong. i do appreciate both of your help.

To add to my previous observation: Either Richard or I
would have suggested to telnet to a different SMTP
server. I could even have given you a suitable IP address.
This would have pointed the finger immediately at your
own ISP, and saved you a great deal of trouble . . .
