port 162

My computer runs XP pro with Wingate proxy server. Wingate firewall says my
Linksys router is looking for port 162 (using UDP)on the computer (fixed ip)
from a multitude of ports on the router (fixed ip). The firewall is
blocking these attempts. I do not have SNMP swrvice installed (at least
it's not listed under services). I also have Verizon DSL. Have shut it down
and restarted with new ip from them, with no effect. Is what I see normal,
or do I have a problem? Would appreciate opinions from interested parties.
Thanks.

There is not much you can do about this that you are not
already doing. That systems outside of your control are
evidently probing your machine (and no doubt your router
also) to see whether the community string for SMTP traps
can be guessed is not something you can further control,
but only block.

Is there a way to block this activity at the router? I would consider
investing in a more secure router if it could offer more protection.
Thanks.

A number of liinksys routers do have a built-in firewall.
You should refer to the docs for your model.
