How can I solve this problem or the spammers finding new ways to get
through Firefox?

set javascript to default off and then whitelist the pages you know need
javascript for normal functions...

How do *spammers* get through to Firefox? Firefox is a browser,
spammers use e-mail.

I had a popup problem. It was not Firefox - - I had a Trojan.

They can be tough to discover.

So far, no popup as defeated the defalult blocker in Firefox. I'm sure
it can happen - *so far*, not to me. Yep, a Trojan did it and it was no
fault of Firefox (or T-bird).

Hello,

Do it another way - get a HOSTS file installed and keep it updated, then get
"eDexter" and also run Peer Guardian.

I think the most common way for ads to get around the popup blocker now
is to use Flash. You can disable that by typeing "about:config" in the
location bar and adding the integer preference
"privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins" with value 2.

That will stop Flash from opening new windows whether they are
requested or not. If you need to use Flash that opens windows,
whitelisting the site should work.

Other alternatives are the FlashBlock extension or the AdBlock one.
AdBlock with Filterset.G will block the Flash ads that would open new
windows.

Got an example? I always see this type of comment with no URL to back it up.

All the links provided at that URL don't open popups. What I meant
by my comment above is an example URL that is fully and always
reproducable. I've yet to see one.

The ads that cause the popups are changed and rotated, so I'm not
surprised no one has tracked down the always-reproducible URL you want.
Maybe you'll take the word of a Firefox developer that the Flash popups
do get past the blocker in Firefox (in its default configuration).

I haven't seen any of these since 1.0.2. That version was vulnerable to
Flash popunders. Haven't seen one since upgrading.

Maybe you've been using AdBlock or FlashBlock since 1.0.2?

Steps to reproduce (hi, Brian ;) :

1. Create a fresh profile, using Firefox 1.0.4.

2. Run Firefox 1.0.4 using the new profile.

3. Go to <http://cdn.fastclick.net/fastclick.net/ffp.swf>

Notes:

The clean profile is necessary because there are settings and
extensions which will stop Flash from opening the popup.

The window that pops under is blank because I didn't include any
info to tell fastclick which ad to serve. If you want to see an
ad in the popunder window, try this URL instead:

<http://cdn.fastclick.net/fastclick....1&ff=1&width=720&height=300&top=375&left=480">

Actually longer than that. It may be that I never got around to installing
Flashblock with 1.0.2. Can't remember. 1.0.2 was here such a short time
because of the phishing vulnerability.

Oh FFS, Shockwave files don't count... I'm talking about general
surfing.

Oh FFS, Flash is /commonly/ used for serving ads encountered
during "general surfing". It's not as if fastclick is causing
popunders as a proof-of-concept exercise.

Newsflash:
Your inability to duplicate a problem does not mean it doesn't exist.

Your persistance in it's denial is clearly indicative of some kind of
bias on your part. Did you code the popup blocker or something?

Bullshit. If it exists, it should be easily duplicated. Pure science.
I suppose you believe in ghosts too?

The ol' room temperature fusion "experiment" reported in Utah a few
years back comes to mind. <grin>

eh, I'll butt out now.

It is. In this thread, I posted links which will let you easily
duplicate the popups.
Pure science.

Oh, science. Absence of evidence != evidence of absence, as Homer
pointed out.

Besides, there's no lack of evidence. The popups are a known problem,
blogged about by Firefox developers who've seen them, and you've been
given links to reproduce them without fail.

I believe you don't use Firefox; those of us who do use it know it's a
very good browser, but not a perfect one. Making false claims about
how good it is is an interesting tactic, but unlikely to do much harm
as long as the claims are so clearly delusional.
