POP3 Email in Vista

Guest

I am running Vista RC-1, and for the most part am pretty happy with it, minus
1 huge glaring issue. I am not able to retrieve *any* pop3 email, reguardless
of client. I've tried Windows Mail, Outlook 2003, and Thunderbird. All three
try for a long time, but eventually time out. The pop account is a generic
pop account run by my work.

Am I missing something? Everything I've read online talks about hotmail/msn
pop accounts. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Can you expand on this a little bit? What problems did you have/what did you
do to fix it?

I didn't use the full email address in the mail account setup, just the name
"NOT" the "@abc.com".

I had the same touble - it was Mcafee email scanner. Try disabling your virus
scanner to test it.

I really do not think that it is just the antivirus software. I diasabled
and then removed norton and still cannot get Outlook 2003 to receive any pop3
emails. I have to use secure logging 995 for incoming and 465 for outgoing
mail. I have tried every thing that I can think of and finally have it to
were it will send a test message but gives an error on the incomming server.
So it has to be something else

Look - if several programs will not receive mail - the arrow points to the
POP account - there is no "generic account" as such - is your "work"
allowing access to it's POP account? Have you verified the account
settings?

The Problem did not appear until I updated Vista to RC1 before that Outlook
POP 3 worked fine. I can log on through the different websites and I
verified all info in all fields. Secondly you are absoulutly correct that
there is no generic account. However if two different accounts have the
same problem then it is not the accounts. In my case, in Outlook when you
press test account it will send the test message with no problem but when it
tries to receive I get an error. So it is not the account as when I log in
through the web sites I have a bunch of test messages.

I could get it to work for me in RC-1 as well. However, RC-2 I can't figure
out the secret handshake to get it working. I am hoping that I don't have to
go back to Windows XP.

Did you ever figure anything out? I have installed the Golden build and can't
get POP to work with any email client. When I go into the test account, the
send and receive both seem to work. When I click send/receive in outlook I
eventuall get the 0x8004210A error. No problems in Windows XP and I actually
got it working in Vista RC but not RC2 or RTM

I just did clean install of vista ultimate + Office 2007 and can't get my
msn pop3 to work. I just got off the phone with msn tech support and they
confirmede that it doesn't work. Did anybody get a work-around figureds out
yet?

Well, you are the first one that has found information that it does not work.
It worked in RC1 and not in RC2 or the RTM. Did they offer any explaination
as to whether or not they plan on fixing it? The thing does not work with ANY
POP account. I have tried a number of them... nothing.

What do you mean "the thing does not work with ANY POP account"? I have pop3
email accounts set up in Windows Mail in Vista RTM and they work just fine.
You'll need to provide more information besides "does not work" if you want
help. I can't address MSN because I don't use it.

POP3 accounts do work in Windows Mail as you say. To address the MSN pop account that people are having problems with is the SPA setting that is used when trying to install this legacy account in Vista Mail. For some reason these old MSN POP Legacy accounts do not install and work in Windows Mail because of the SPA setting that is needed with this legacy pop3 account..

I have a number of traditional POP3 accounts like you would find offered with
access such as BellSouth. Sending is not a problem. However, you cannot
receive. The "test" when you are setting up the account in Outlooks works but
the test mail that was sent never arrives. I log on to web access to mail and
that is there an a number of other emails as well. When Outlook tries to
retrive the incoming mail, it may pull down the first one but that is it.

Installing Windows Vista RC1 and it works first time every time. Going to
RC2, it does not work and RTM does not work. I can go back and install RC1
clean and it works.

No virus scanning, no firewall, problem remains.

Thanks, Peter. I appreciate the information. BTW, it's nice to see you back
in the groups and I trust that you are feeling better.
