pop-ups on desktop

I am getting multiple pop-ups to my windows 2000 desktop.
I know that it is normal to get pop-ups when accessing the
internet, but these pop-ups occur whether I am accessing
the internet or not. I have a DSL connection. I cannot
figure out what is running that it letting the pop-ups
access the desktop. Thanks
 
Disable the Messenger service and install a personal
firewall such as ZoneAlarm
 
if you have been on some ones site ther get old of your IP
or PC name and pop-up get fired to your PC every so
offten, get a firewall or pop-up blocker.
