pop-up

I've been getting a pop-up or two about every hour that purports to
block pop-up ads. The pop-up comes whether or not I have the browser in
action. (Since I use Optimum Online, I'm always connected.) The pop-up
directs me to a Web site www.fightpopups.com where I discover that they
want me to pay $39.95 to get rid of something they're causing. I'll be
damned if I pay their extortion. Anybody have any suggestions?

Disable the Messenger Service (Run services.msc), and kill the useless TCP port

haha

I also get pop ups opening while the pc is connected but not in use.
I do not have XP, but ME.
I know you can get popup stoppers and other protection software but I would
like to be able to go in and remove whatever got in my machine & permitted
this in the first place.
Is it likely to be a cookie or I should be looking for or some other
installation ?
Or does the Messenger thing apply to ME also ?

thanks

This is like the organized crime protection racket. You should get a
firewall like ZoneAlarm or Kerio. Google for it. Ignore advice about
turning off Messenger service as this still leaves your system wide open to
the Internet. ShieldsUp!! at http://www.grc.com will show you the ports
that are open.

Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search and Destroy are also good applications to get.

Google has a very good pop-up stopper for Web induced ads.

A good HOSTS file stops many nasties as well.

Stopping Messenger spam and computer security aren't even related, nor
did the original poster inquire about anything other than stopping the
Messenger spam.

I guess you would show someone how to start a car and engage the
transmission without telling them about brakes and what stop lights or stop
signs are for?

Your answer -- and similar answers -- worked perfectly.

Unfortunately, some that answered didn't have a clue as to what they
were talking about, but glad you heeded the proper advice anyway.
