Pop up ads

Bill carlisle

Can someone please help me regarding how I can stop my
computer from getting those annoying pop up ads. I am
being bombarded by software developers that are trying to
sell me software to rid my computer of annoying pop up
ads. I can't bring myself to purchase there software.

There methods of marketing are very intrusive and just
down right pit bullish. There go's another one. This one
is from www.fightpopups.com and of course there's
www.endads.com just to name a few. Thank you in advance
for your help.

Regards

Bill

Hey, Bill I have a suggestion that you may want to try.
Shut off the windows messenger service on your computer.
Just go to control panel, admin tools, services,
messenger, click on stop, then disable the auto startup.
Good Luck,
Rob

Go to Google. Get their new toolbar -- it stops all popups (you can override
that).

Other browsers have this built-in (like MozillaFirebird). But the Google
toolbar adds it "as if" IE had it, too. It's great - and I keep using IE 6
as my default browser.

Disabling messenger is not the answer - it's a mere bandaid, so this is not
good advice. The real problem is that the ports are open - and although
messenger spam is annoying, it sure isn't the worst thing that could happen
(think about the recent batch of RPC exploits!)

You need a firewall. 'Messenger spam', is not in itself harmful,
but is symptomatic of a larger problem - your computer has ports open from
the Internet.

You can disable the Messenger service, but that is unwise as a solution as
you'll still have the underlying problem that caused you to get the messages
in the first place - consider the messages a useful warning that you have no
protection from the Internet. You need a firewall. 'Messenger spam', is not

has ports open from the Internet. This is a very important thing to do,
especially in these times of MSBlast...

For a standalone machine, see www.sygate.com for a free personal firewall -
or enable your XP firewall (personally I'd go for the former).

See http://securityadmin.info/faq.htm for more info.

First off.. Learn to search. The answer has been posted so many times over
the last year, it's ridiculous. See my signature for help.

You need to enable either your built in firewall or install and configure a
third party firewall. (the only people I KNOW cannot do the built in
firewall are you poor AOL users. AOL, in their genius, has futzed up some
works and the built in software doesn't work with AOL, you WILL have to get
a third party application and learn to use it - sorry - it's the price you
pay for going AOL, I guess. heh)
