pop-up with Dilbert.com?

I know my PC is clean of viruses & spyware. I've even tried this on some
virgin installs of WinXP SP2. and, I even tried it with other PCs that have
antispyware and antivirus installed and hasn't detected any malware.

I only use IE's own Pop-up Blocker. I don't use any 3rd party Toolbars w/
built-in pop-up blockers.

for the most part (over 75% of the time), I get 1 pop-up that manages to
bypass my "High: Block all pop-ups" Filter Level setting, when I visit
Dilbert.com

is it just me? can someone else try it?

is it some sophisticated JavaScript that's been designed to bypass IE's own
"High: Block all pop-ups" Filter Level?

note: I don't get the pop-up with Firefox & Opera

Not all popup blocker are the same. You can go to www.popuptest.com to see
how the popups in question are circumventing your blocker.
The MSN toolbar has a listing of allowed sites for popups, so you may want
to check those settings first.

IE blocks the popup here. I have it set on Medium. No other browsers on
this machine and I'm not at home to check my other machines.

hi Rob!

thanks for informing me about popuptest.com! it'll prove to be a valuable
pop-up tester! HOWEVER, the only time my IE's (I don't use MSN) Pop-up
Blocker failed was with the 'Flash' like animated pop-ups (built in the page)
(e.g. floating, dropdown, sticky, etc.) and not the pop-ups that open new
windows. which I've already expected.

I believe that Dilbert.com has some clever JavaScript that manages to bypass
IE's own Pop-up Blocker at its highest settings. I ONLY use IE's Pop-up
Blocker. I don't use MSN's nor any other 3rd-party pop-up blocker.

any reasons for how it manages to bypass IE's Pop-up Blocker?

I don't get a popup when I go there. Could it be because I have the
originating site in the the Restricted Sites zone?

According to IE, these sites had content on that page:
http://a.tribalfusion.com
http://c4.maxserving.com
http://media.fastclick.net

Okay, but Dilbert.com itself isn't in the Restricted Sites zone. If I
turn off JavaScript in the Internet Zone, I get the page without ads
(cool!) and without popups. No matter what configuration changes I make,
I don't get popups. This is a Good Thing, but I wish I understood why
it's happening.

so, you don't get ANY pop-ups with Dilbert.com, even if your IE's pop-up
blocker is "off" & your JavaScript "on"? do you use any 3rd-party pop-up
blocker {including 3rd-party toolbars with built-in pop-up blocker (e.g.
Google Toolbar)}? or have you previously installed ANY 3rd-party pop-up
blocker?

Yes, I have the Google toolbar installed, and its popup blocker enabled,
but the Google popup blocker makes a click sound and bumps a counter in
the toolbar when a popup is suppressed. It didn't do that on the Dilbert
site, and nothing changed when I turned the blocker off. Other
popup-heavy sites such as tvguide.com behave just as expected, clicking
and counting on nearly every page transition.

I figured it out. it's an ActiveX based script that overrides IE's own
pop-up blocker. if I have the ActiveX at prompt or deny, I won't get any
pop-ups.
