In Tools/internet options/security set the level to "High"
This will block all popu windows, but can cause some
websites not to display correctly if they use ActiveX

Also, some pop-ups use Windows Messenger service (NT, XP, and W2K) or
WinPopup (W98). Disable whichever one applies for your respective OS. Which
is why we ask you to "make a good post", so we needn't guess which OS you
are using and can cut to the chase.

How to for W2K:
Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows XP Home:
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows NT:
Click Start ->Control Panel
Double Click Administrative Tools
Select Services-> Double-click on Messenger
In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop,
Then choose Disable as the Startup Type
Click OK

W98, W98se, (and ME?)
Control panel>add/remove programs>Windows set-up tab>highlight system
tools>details>Un-check WinPopup> OK>Apply>OK out. Re-boot if necessary.
