I keep getting a pop up that calls itself windows file
protection which states that files required to run windows
properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To
maintain stability insert your windows 2000 cd now. Since
I don't have a cd ( windows bought with computer ) I click
cancel which prompts a new pop up that asks if I want to
keep the unrecognized version....so I say yes and this
just keeps on happening over and over. HELP PLEASE.

Windows File Protection is a tool that prevents critical system files being
replaced and leaving the system unstable. When windows detects a critical
file has changed it tries to replace it to its original from the dllcache
folder or the original installation source.
You can disable this feature in the registry, this article will explain how.

Note however that the file checker is trying to protect your system so it
might be worth trying to find a CD somewhere. If you have an i386 directory
on your PC you can probably use that. Reinstalling service pack 4 might also
help, try that first.
