poor connects with modem

For the most part, my Lucent Win Modem was connecting at 40000kbs or better
on AOL a regular basis. It was connected through COM 3 on my computer. But
last week I suddenly started getting very poor connections, often 24000kbs or
less. I checked the settings and my modem was now listed as Lucent Win Modem
#2 through COM 4. COM 1, 2 and 3 were "in use." By what, I don't know.
Anyway, anyone with experience in this department and with any tips...thanks
in advance!

Your modem has somehow become duplicated. Go to control panel and click on
the System icon. Choose the Hardware tab and then click on Device manager.
Right click on each instance of your modem and select 'uninstall'. This will
remove your modem driver. Finally right click Delete 'all' instances the
computer icon at the top of the device manager list and click on the 'scan
for new hardware' option. The system will be scanned and your modem should
be picked up and reinstalled.
As for your modem speed of 40kbps down to 24kbps this is usually due to your
isp's bandwidth and is out of your control.

Connection speed problems are frequently also caused by phone line
conditions, telco problems, and by the modem itself, in fact I've seen
several cases of lousey speeds directly due to failing, defective or
just plain cheap winmodems. Since the OP's modem configuration has
changed somehow apparently on its own, I would not rule out the modem as
suspect.

The motherboard typically has 2 serial ports so you certainly don't know
very much.

Seems more than you do...
Better check your information.

Internal Modems have their own "com ports"and don't use the
motherboards serial ports.
