Poor Audio Quality when recording through PP

Audio question I'm hoping someone can help with.
I work for a school district and we have a lot of students that use
PowerPoint. They have the need to add commentary voice over’s to the slide
shows. We have had the problem of poor audio quality during playback.
Unfortunately students are spending way too much time re-recording audio.
We have tried different types of microphones including the ones build-in to
the monitor, high quality external Mics, and high quality headsets. No
improvement has been noticed. I was wondering if the actual quality of the
recording can be increased. What quality does it record at? 8bit mono? Maybe
I can increase that to 16bit or higher to see if that helps.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Josh, all you have to do is use the Windows built in Sound Recorder, (usually
in Accesories), not the interface provided with Power Point.
With Sound Recorder, when you save the file you can select the quality to
have what you need.
Keep in mind that better quality means bigger file size.

Two things I'd look into for starters:

1) Always set the sound quality (click Change Quality ...) before starting to
record. If memory serves, PPT always resets it to a very low quality level
each time you begin to record narration.

2) If possible, use a USB headset/microphone, particularly if you're using
laptop computers.

Atilio, How do you tell powerpoint to record using sound recorder instead of
whatever it is using? I've had the same problem with ppt 02, static or
crackling sound in the playback. Sound recorder works fine. Just don't know
how to make ppt use it.

When you click Record Narration, there's a Change Quality button on the dialog
box that appears.

Click that, choose better settings than the defaults which, if memory serves,
always reset to the lowest common denominator. Something like an Edison movie
soundtrack. <g>
