Pointer Freeze

My Computer has a problem that I can not seen to work out or fix. The mouse
pointer untermittantly freezes then recoveres as if nothing happened.
Occasionally it totally freezes and is only recoverable by hiting reset.

I am running XP home SP2. I have three things hanging off my USB ports
(I've heard that USBs can cause the mouse hang)

Does anyone know what can be done to get my maching behaving again?
