I have a dell dimension 3000 which has stopped installing usb devices which
don't require drivers. The existing devices (wireless lan etc) are ok as long
as I don't move them to another usb port, in which case they won't install.
All these devices install and run correctly on my toshiba laptop. Any
suggestions please?

Stratty,

Is the Human Interface Device (HID) service running?

If you right-click MY COMPUTER, click MANAGE, scroll to removalable Storage,
do you have anything under PHYSICAL LOCATIONS? If there are any with the RED
'X' then delete them & leave the ones detected there

Do you have any yellow exclamation marks under the USB catagory in DEVICE
MANAGER?

Awaiting your reply,

Hi thanks for prompt reply. I looked at HID and saw 2 instances running ok.
Nothing under PHYSICAL LOCATIONS. Nothing with a yellow ! under device
manager. I'm wondering if I need to uninstall everything and start again.
(Danger being I won't be able to get anything to run!)

I noticed in XP help that if too many devices were set up manually, plug and
play will no longer work. Could this be it? If so, how do I find out?

Hi Stratty,

I would try "uninstalling" (not disable) all instances of the peripheral USB
devices in Device Manager. Then try adding each one back, one at a time,
letting Windows redetect them. I would even go to the extent of re-booting
after each successful re-install.

Hi Stratty,

I forgot to mention, prior to doing this, check the manufacturers website
for each piece of hardware, and make sure you have the latest, greatest,
version of their driver. Do *not* go to Windows Update for drivers.
