Plug and Play External Drive doesnt work with XP SP1

I have a PC running with Windows XP and an external hard
drive connected with a USB/plug and play.

When I re-installed Windows XP, the external drive shows
up as drive E: (C=internal drive, D=CD/DVD). I then
downloaded Windows XP Service Pack 1 and installed it.

I then try the following three steps:

Case 1
I unplug the external drive and install Windows XP
Service Pack 1. When I re-boot the system, re-connect the
external hard drive, the system is unable to recognize
the external hard drive.

My computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Disk Drives
show only the internal hard drive

Case 2
I do not unplug the external drive and install Windows XP
Service Pack 1. I get two messages warnings that the
installation wants to overwrite something and the system
may be unstable.

If I click on OK. The installation proceeds. After the
post-installation re-boot, the system is unable to
recognize the external hard drive, as is Case 1.

Case 3
I do not unplug the external drive and install Windows XP
Service Pack 1. I get two messages warnings that the
installation wants to overwrite something and the system
may be unstable.

If I click on CANCEL. The installation proceeds. After
the post-installation re-boot, the system is able to
recognize the external hard drive, but the system is
unstable. It will not re-boot to the C drive.

I have only a USB external CD-Rom drive (my internal died and can't be
fixed because of problem with motherboard attachment). How can I
reinstall XP? Is there a way to add a line to the boot discs along with
the usb drivers to recognize the external drive?

Hi Teeper,

I don't have a solution to your problem but, you will be more likely to find
one if you make an original post instead of adding your query to an existing
post.

LOL, JAX
