"Please Wait" message and wallpaper picture disappears

I've got a customer with a machine that produces a stylized "Please Wait"
message a few minutes after boot-up and the background fades to gray. It
seems like the windows interface style is being changed but there's no other
evidence of this. Also, the desktop wallpaper picture disappears soon after
boot-up. No big deal just a little annoying. If anyone can help with this it
would be appreciated.

Sounds like something 3rd party if you have already checked the
display settings and startup. Make sure that active desktop is
disabled and that no wallpaper is chosen. If the problem continues you
may want to simply create a new profile. Use the default_user trick or
just copy over my documents, favorites and history. This may even
speed up their load time.
