Disappearing wallpaper file

I lost a favorite photo I was using as wallpaper. I know it's still on the
computer somewhere, because it displays as wallpaper when I start the
computer or come out of the screensaver or standby and get the "Press Ctrl
Alt Del" message. But as soon as the computer is unlocked, the wallpaper pic
disappears. It doesn't show up in a search for .bmp files. Any hints to
where it might be and with what extension, or any links to a wallpaper help
page would be appreciated.

It's probably in your Temporary Internet Files. Go to Folder Options and
set the View to see all hidden files/folders/extensions. I also find
XP's search feature to be pretty lame. I would instead download and
install the free Agent Ransack from here:

Now do a search for *.bmp and/or *.jpg with Agent Ransack.
