Over the weekend, my virus protection found a virus (while using IE) and I thought it fixed itself, but now IE 6.0 on W2K will not work (for any user). I try to change some settings - in particular the current location of the Temporary Internet files folder and the amount of disk space to use. I get this error - Please select a value between 1 and 0 for how much disk space temporary Internet files may use

I scoured the Internet all weekend (using Netscape 7.0 - ugh) trying to find what the problem was. I've used HijackThis, CWSShredder, and even deleted the folder c:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files, and nothing has worked. One poster suggested that my winsock was corrupted, so I fixed that. I've gone manually and researched every process running and have not fixed the problem. This has effected MSN Messenger 6.0 as well

Have any ideas? If so, please post here and to my email address harringtonce_AT_hotmail.com. Thank you

Harrington,

Tough situation there, but I might be able to help. You'll need to carefully
follow my instructions, but chances are they will work to resolve your
situation.

REBUILDING AN NTUSER.DAT FILE

1. Unhide hidden folders and files in Windows Explorer.
2. Move (cut and paste) any ntuser.dat file or ntuser.log file found in the
local All User profile to a temporary folder (just create a folder
anywhere)--here's the folder path for XP and 2000:

C:\Documents and Settings\All User\ntuser.dat

3. Do the same for any ntuser.dat file or ntuser.log file located in the
Default User profile (this folder is hidden by default).

C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\ntuser.dat

4. Create a new local user--call it 'temp' for example.
5. Make sure you new local user (temp) is part of the administrators group.
6. Log off the computer (you don't need to restart), then log back onto
Windows as the new user--this process will create your new user's profile.
7. Test the computer to see if the problem is fixed under this new user's
profile--if so, you've got a corrupted ntuser.dat file.
8. After testing, restored the ntuser.dat files that were moved back to
their original folder locations.
9. Delete your temporary local user profile and account--you'll have to
login as a different user to do this.
10. E-mail me with any questions you've got at tshillam_AT_hotmail.com.
11. If your ntuser.dat file is corrupted, I'll have to walk you through
another set of steps to fix your current profile.

Best regards,

Todd
