Help, I may have just screwed myself. I have a laptop
with W2k, well had. For the past week the computer would
just shutdown by itself or give me a blue screen of "can't
load the regeristry hive" or another blue screen of "hdd
has problems and back up your files". I backed up all of
my information except my outlook.pst file (forgot). By
this time yesterday the computer would not even let me
boot. Safe mode and Dos are did not work. So I tried a
repair. The repair didn't go so well, so I then tried to
re-install W2k over top of the existing partiction. When
it did this it erased the existing files and re-copies the
files back. Well, the install quite half way through and
stopped. Now I can't do anything. Is there anyway of
recovering my pst file?

Thanks, I just found out that I can to the file via the
console repair for W2k but now my problem is that the pst
file is 38M and I don't know how to get it to a disk or
zip it. Do you?

you might try http://www.r-tt.com/
they have data recovery software that may work, it worked
for me but my situation was a bit different.
I put the software on a seperate drive and slaved the
drive w/ the missing data to that one. Anything you can
do to keep from writting to the affected disk is
recommended. But, at least they let you try the software
to see what it CAN find before you buy it for the
recovery process.

As long as the file is intact why don't you do a fresh (parallel install) of
Windows 2000 (or any OS really) just to get a functional operating system.
Then you can copy the file to a network location somewhere before you
format/reinstall clean.

I don't mean to be stupid but how? If I try to install
W2k right now it wants to format the hard drive. It does
not reconize the previous W2k install.
