Please offer some help.

Morning all,

Please be patient with me. I am computer illiterate.I want to reinstall my
windows XP. The computer has not been working properly. I do have the
upgrade that was made available. So I put the disk in.

Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD.

Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is
currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be
recovered.

I dont have the option to continue, just cancel.
I wonder if it is because I downloaded the upgrade for xp? what do you
think? Is there a way I can go ahead and do it anyway?

Please offer some help.

If you're using SP2, this might explain it. What is it you want to
accomplish? What problems are you having? If you want to do a total
reinstall of Windows XP, you can back up your data, and then boot from the
XP CD.

Yes, this is because you have installed SP2 and the cd you have does not
include SP2. You will have to either uninstall SP2 or create a
slipstreamed installation cd including SP2.

Put the Windows XP CD into the drive and then shut down and restart
the computer with the CD still in the drive. The computer should now
boot from the CD and give you the option to delete the existing
partition and install a fresh version of Windows.

Good luck

Having done the SP2 upgrade means you can't do a 'repair' reinstall
without removing that first. You can approach this two ways:

One:
In Add/remove Programs, look for Windows Service Pack 2, highlight and
Remove it. Reboot to the 'preSP2 state, then shut down. Then Set the
BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk - for that, at power on, immediately
hit the hotkey (specific to the machine) that enters BIOS setup. Most
common is DEL, various Function keys and Insert are also used. If you
hit these at this point there will often be a 'Hit whatever to enter
Setup' message.

In the BIOS setup, either

An explicit 'Boot' page
Down arrow to highlight the CD drive, then use the + key of the number
pad to push it up top.

Or
A 'BIOS settings' page, highlight Boot Order, and use PageDn to cycle
round to CDRom, C

Either way then have your XP CD in the drive ready, hit ESC and then go
to Exit - Saving settings and confirm with Y, and it will reboot, using
the CD now if one is there.

At boot you will probably be asked to hit a key to confirm that you *do*
want to boot the CD

Enter Setup (do not take `Repair` at this stage), then after the license
agreement take `Repair Installation`. This will retain your existing
software installations and most settings. But Updates will have to be
run again, you have the SP2 all ready to use

Always back up essential data before doing any major system operation
like this, if you are still in a position to do so

Or
Two,
you can deliberately reformat the disk to start entirely clean; back up
data first, then you would not need to bother with removing SP2, but
follow the same path as above, but instead of Repair Installation take
New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and
delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at
the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
