We have 3 computers in our home,(dad, mom, kids)and would
like to put WindowsXP on all three without having to buy
the operating system 3 times. I thought I had heard
somewhere that if you try to put winxp on more then one
computer that microsoft could remotely shut down your
computer and you wouldn't be able to use it again. Can
you buy 1 operating system and use it on 3 computers in
the same household? Can anyone help!

One licence per computer. Yes - you have to buy three licences if you want
to run on three machines.

Hi

One copy of XP per machine. You can't use one copy of XP to install onto 3
different PCs. You will either have to buy 3 separate copies of XP or
purchase 2 extra Licenses:

"Additional Licenses for Windows XP Professional"

No, the days of buying one OS and installing to all PC's in the
home are done. Unless, you are willing to pick up the phone &
deliberately tell someone a lie or two.
Windows is and has been - One copy, One License on a single
PC. Windows Product Activation is a method to prevent what
is called "Casual Copying" . This isn't to stop the professional
pirates, but just the average user who for years has "abused" the
Microsoft licensing (EULA) agreement.
There is a whole segment of the Internet, called "Warez" that
specializes in bypassing WPA and other forms of enforcement
on software licensing.
So can it be done - Yes it can, but that kind of information isn't
going to be posted here.

Greetings --

You'll need to purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer
on which you wish to install it.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to
determine final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which
WinXP licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is
that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

You can buy additional licenses, assuming you have a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would
if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

I have 3 persons in my home, (me,mom, kid). I would like to put double
cheeseburgers in all three mouths without having to pay 3 times.
