Please help

They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing - and I am living proof
of that. I thought that it would be easy to do some port forwarding to open
up some ports to enable faster downloading. However, I now appear to have
totally messed up my internet connections! I believe that I may have done
something to my internet connection which means that on trying to change the
settings on the internet connection, I am told that the host computer doesn't
allow changes. Now I cannot even find the internet connection. I have run
a network diagnosis and am being told that my IP address is causing my modem
to fail.

I really do not know where to go from here. Please help.

Many thanks.

It's a bit hard to help you since we don't know what you did to get into
this pickle. ;-) You don't use port forwarding to get faster downloads.
You use port forwarding to send data coming in on specific ports to
specific computers, like when you're using remote desktop applications.
You also set up port forwarding in a router, not on a computer. However,
it sounds like you don't have a router but connect directly to a cable
or DSL modem. Knowing how you get Internet access and with what hardware
would be helpful.

So, where were you messing about with these settings? Do you have a
third-party firewall or are you using the built-in XP firewall? We
rather need to know this. We also need to know if your computer is
standalone, on a network with other computers (it doesn't sound like it,
but I like to be sure), a home computer, etc.

For the IP address, go to Control Panel>Network Connections and
double-click it to open it. Find the entry for your network adapter and
right-click it, then left-click on Properties. You will see an entry for
TCP/IP. Double-click it and set the IP and DNS to Automatic.

Post back with the answers to the questions I asked you, including the
firewall information. It will also be useful to tell us what you were
hoping to accomplish in a little more detail other than "faster
downloading". Knowing what your Internet connection is now and from
where you were trying to download, if this is a recent slowdown, what
you really mean by "faster", are the sorts of details that will help us
help you.
